Orville Wright (1871 - 1948) and his brother Wilbur were pioneers in heavier-than-air flight in the early 20th Century. Orville originally started a printing business and later ran a bicycle company which he used to fund his interest in flying and he and his brother, after receiving information about aeronautics from the Smithsonian Institution, they began experimenting with gliders before finally making a manned, powered flying machine.
