Isaac Watts (1674-1748)
Isaac Watts (1674-1748) was born and raised in Southhampton, England, the eldest of eight children. In many ways a pioneer and a remarkable man; Woods is credited with being the father of the modern hymn, with about 700 to his credit. He also wrote a textbook on logic that was the standard work for decades, and the first book of poetry specifically for children which went through 95 editions within 100 years of its first publication.
