James Watt (1736 - 1819)
James Watt (1736 - 1819) was a Scottish inventor and engineer. At the age of nineteen Watt was sent to Glasgow to become a mathematical-instrument maker and soon gained a reputation as a skilled engineer. After repairing a steam engine, Watt discovered a way to make it more efficient. He worked on the idea for several months and eventually produced a steam engine that cooled the used steam in a condenser separate from the main cylinder. This greatly improved the efficiency of the engine. Over 60 years after his death, the British Association gave his name to the unit of electrical power.
