James D Watson (1928 - ) won the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine in 1962 along with Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins "for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material". Watson, who grew up in Illinois, had a childhood interest in ornithology, however, after reading Erwin Schr?dinger's book 'What Is Life?' his interests moved towards genetics. After completing his PhD, his work focussed on studying viruses and in 1951 moved to the University of Cambridge where he met Francis Crick. The pair shared an interest in the molecule of DNA and despite having to continue his own research on viruses, Watson collaborated with Crick and in 1953 they discovered a structure for DNA.
