Henry Vaughan (1622-1695)
Henry Vaughan (1622-1695) was an Anglo-Welsh poet who is best known for his spiritual poetry. He was educated at Oxford and studied Law in London, before being recalled home in 1642 to Wales when the first Civil War broke out; and remained there for the rest of his life. At some time in the 1650s he began to practice medicine and continued to do so until he died. Vaughans poetry was largely disregarded in his own day and for a century after his death. Only really returning to prominence with the revival of interest in the 17th century metaphysical poets in the 20th century.
