James Thomson (1700-1748)
James Thomson (1700-1748) was a Scottish poet whose father was a parish minister. He studied divinity at Edinburgh University, but left early and went to London to pursue a career as a dramatist. This poem was first published in 1727, three months after Newton's death. Thomson demonstrates a real enthusiasm for the discoveries and ideas that Newton put forward, and this period shows a real flourishing in the acceptance of the ideas of science.
