Thomas Stanley (1625-1678)
Thomas Stanley (1625-1678) is principally remembered for his 'History of Philosophy' which was a monumental work first published in four volumes; and which remained the standard reference work for the subject well into the eighteenth century. His best known poem is 'The Relapse'; and he is generally placed in the school of Metaphysical poets. That wide breed of folk who cogitate on philosophical fancies in their poetry. He came from a wealthy background in the English shires, and went to Pembroke College, Cambridge at the tender age of thirteen. He married young, and had a large family, and although a Royalist, was mostly undisturbed by the English Civil War.
