William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was born in Stratford-Upon-Avon, England. His father was a local tradesman who held several important local offices. His mother came from a wealthy family who paid a handsome dowry to see their daughter married off. He attended Stratford Grammar School, but his formal education seems to have ended there. At the age of 18 he married Anne Hathaway, who was to bear him three children. By about 1587 he had moved to London and had begun a career as an actor and playwright; up until his death producing arguably the finest body of work of any writer, as well as adding over 1500 words to enrich the English language along the way (Click here for a selection)
