Alan Perlis (1922 - 1990) became interested in mathematics while in the US Army during World War 2 and although he already had a bachelors degree in Chemistry, he went on to study for a Masters and a Ph.D. in mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He later became interested in computer programming and became a prominent Computer Scientist.
