James Gates Percival (1795-1856)
James Gates Percival (1795-1856) was born in Berlin, Connecticut, USA. He was a man of many talents and was the state geologist between 1833 and 1842 of Connecticut, and of Wisconsin between 1854 and 1856. He studied at Yale University and did the first complete geological survey of Connecticut in 1842. He also did important work on Webster's 'American Dictionary of the English Language'. 'The Coral Grove' is one of his more famous compositions, and his first volume of poetry 'Promethius' appeared in 1820.
