Charles Peirce (1839 - 1914) was an American philosopher and logician who originally trained and worked as a chemist. He was an innovator in areas varying from mathematics to the philosophy of science and discovered that logical operations could be carried out using electrical switching circuits. This idea was later used in the production of digital computers.
