Linus Pauling (1901 - 1994) won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954 for his work describing the nature of chemical bonds and also the Nobel Peace Prize in 1962 for his campaign against nuclear testing above ground. Pauling was an American chemist and biochemist who pioneered the application of quantum mechanics to chemistry. He made important contributions to methods which could determine the structures of crystals and proteins and was involved in the development of the electric car.
