Alfred Nobel (1833 -1896) was a Sweedish chemist and engineer who invented dynamite. He made a fortune from his armaments company, Bofors. In his will, Nobel left a large portion of his estate to establish the Nobel Prizes. The prizes are awarded anually for eminence in physical science, chemistry, medicine or physiology, literature and peace.
