John von Neumann (1903 -1957) was a Hungarian born, American mathematician who made contributions in many mathematical fields including quantum physics, economics, computer science and hydrodynamics. He was a prodigy and by the age of 12 was studying graduate level mathematics. He was also an eccentric character, dressing formally with suit and tie at all times and throwing extravagant parties. During the second world war, he joined the Manhattan Project to help design 'explosive lenses' for the nuclear weapons. A crater on the moon, 'Von Neumann', has since been named after him.
