William Morris (1834-1896) was born in Walthamstow, Essex, England. The son of a wealthy businessman he enjoyed a comfortable childhood before going on to University at Oxford. After leaving Oxford he decided that his future lay in the decorative arts, where he is best known for his fabric and wallpaper designs. He was also a political activist and a committed socialist. Throughout his life Morris was a voracious writer, and well known for his poetry. In 1890 he founded the Kelmscott Press (named after his last home in Hammersmith); where he designed his own typefaces, and printed high quality editions of classic works.
