J S Mill (1806 -1873) was an English philosopher and political economist. The godson of Jeremy Bentham, he was an advocate of utilitarianism and an influential liberal thinker. He had an intensive upbringing and from an early age had learnt to read Greek and Latin and could practice algebra. He wrote several philosophical works and is well known for 'On Liberty' which advocates moral and economical freedom and 'A System of Logic' which outlines Mill's rules for inductive reasoning.
