Margaret Mead (1901 -1978) was an American cultural anthropologist. She studied at Barnard College and Columbia University before travelling to Polynesia in 1925 to conduct field work. Mead joined the American Museum of Natural History, New York City, as assistant curator, and later became its curator of ethnology. Mead concentrated her studies on problems of child rearing, personality, and culture and became President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1975.
