Barbara McClintock (1902 - 1992) won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1983 for the discovery of transposition; the process of genetic material moving to different positions within a cell's DNA. She was one of the world's most distinguished cytogeneticists who focussed on maize cytogenetics throughout much of her career. She produced the first genetic map for maize and was elected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1944.
