Konrad Lorenz (1903 -1989) won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1973 for "discoveries in individual and social behaviour patterns". He was an Austrian zoologist who studied instinctive behavior in animals, specialising in birds. Working with geese, he rediscovered the principle of imprinting by which animals learn various preferences during particularly sensitive periods in their life.
