Carl Linnaeus (1707 - 1778) was a botanist and zoologist from Sweeden. He is widely known as the 'father of modern taxonomy' after laying the foundations of latin nomenclature now widely used for classification in the biological sciences. In 1735 Linnaeus published the first edition of his 'Systema Naturae' which continued to expand up until its final, thirteenth edition in 1770.
