Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865)

> from My Childhood Home I See Again
Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) was born in Kentucky. His father was a carpenter and a farmer, and at the age of seven the family moved to Indiana. His childhood was unremarkable, though he did at times have an uneasy relationship with his father. Later he moved to Illinois where he lived until 1837. He ran unsuccessfully for the Illinois Legislature in 1832, but won in 1834,36,38 and 40. In 1842 he married Mary Todd; had four children, and developed a successful legal practice. Following renewed interest in politics and a stint in the House of Representatives; Lincoln ran for President as a Republican and was elected in 1860. He successfully oversaw the winning of a Civil War and the Freedom for Slaves, and delivered his famous Gettysburg Address. He was re-elected in 1864, and shot dead by John Wilkes Booth while attending the theatre in 1865.
