Edward Lear (1812-1888)
Edward Lear (1812-1888) was born in Holloway, England, the 20th child of a stockbroker and was raised largely by his sister Ann. In 1845 he wrote 'A Book of Nonsense' complete with his own limericks and illustrations for his patron, the Earl of Derby's, grandchildren. During his lifetime he loved travelling and eventually settled in San Remo in 1871 where he remained for the rest of his life. He is remembered for his wonderful linguistic flights of fancy which wouldn't have looked out of place in some John Lennon lyrics; and increasingly for his artwork.
