D. H. Lawrence (1824-1889)
D. H. Lawrence (1824 - 1889) was a novelist, critic, storywriter and one of the most renowned figures in 20th Century English literature. He was born in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire in central England and was the son of a coal miner and former schoolteacher. Lawrence's childhood was filled with poverty and tension between his parents (his mother was much more educated than his father). His first poems were published in 1909 and the publication of his first novel when he was 25 launched his career. His most famous novel is Lady Chatterley's Lover, the story of a wealthy married woman who has an affair with a man who works on her husband's estate. For a long time, the book was banned in the U.K. and the U.S. as it was considered to be pornographic.
