Alfred Korzybski (1879 - 1950) came from a family of scientists, engineers and mathematicians. He studied at Warsaw University of Technology and followed in his family's footsteps to train as an engineer. He moved to the United States during World War 2 and later became a citizen. Here he developed a new, discipline which he called 'general semantics'. His work described his belief that humans' experiences of their environment were abstractions - restricted by the nervous system and language.
