Joyce Kilmer (1868-1918) was born in New Jersey, USA and attended Columbia University where he graduated in 1904. He got married in 1908 to Aline (who was also a poet) and had five children. He worked both on a dictionary and as a school teacher in order to earn a living. In 1917 he went to France to serve in the Fighting-Sixty-Ninth division in World War One; but died in action in July 1918. He was honoured in France for his bravery, and is buried there.
