Fred Hoyle (1915 - 2001) was a British astronomer and writer of science fiction. He was the director of the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge. Hoyle coined the term 'Big Bang' despite being opposed to the theory - arguing that the universe was in a 'steady state'.
