George Herbert (1593-1633)
George Herbert (1593-1633) was born into a wealthy family in England and attended Cambridge University where he went on to become the Public Orator. It was in this role that he came to the attention of King James I, who granted him an annual allowance, and seemed likely to make him an ambassador. However, before this could happen the King died in 1625 and George Herbert instead became ordained into the priesthood in 1626, becoming vicar and rector of the Parish of Bemerton, not far from Salisbury. It is however for his book of poems, The Temple, which was published shortly after his death, for which he is principally remembered.
