Stephen Hawking (1942 - ) holds the position of Lucasian Professor of mathematics at the University of Cambridge and is one of the world's leading theoretical physicists. After studying physics at Oxford University, he went on to complete his PhD at Cambridge, where he first saw symptoms of Motor Neurone disease, the condition which went on to paralyse him. He now is well known for his electronic wheelchair and voice synthesiser which he relies upon for mobility and communication.
