Stephen Hawking (1942 - ) holds the position of Lucasian Professor of mathematics at the University of Cambridge and is one of the world's leading theoretical physicists. After studying physics at Oxford University, he went on to complete his PhD at Cambridge, where he first saw symptoms of Motor Neurone disease, the condition which went on to paralyse him. He now is well known for his electronic wheelchair and voice synthesiser which he relies upon for mobility and communication. In 1974, he was elected as one of the youngest fellows of the Royal Society. Hawking's celebrity has also grown since the publication of his 1988 popular science book 'A Brief History of Time'.
