Robert Stephen Hawker (1803-1875)
Robert Stephen Hawker (1803-1875) was born in Plymouth, the son of a curate. He later became the Vicar of Morwenstow in Cornwall from 1835 to 1874 and was popularly known as 'The Sailors Friend' on account of his willingness to pay for the burial of drowned seamen. He is also credited with having invented the Harvest Festival.
