Tom Hanks (1956-)
Tom Hanks (1956-) is an American actor and movie producer. One of the highest-grossing actors of all time, he established himself as a Hollywood talent after starring in the film Big (1988) and with the success of A League of Their Own (1992) and Sleepless in Seattle (1983). He won two successive Academy Awards in 1994 and 1995 for playing a gay lawyer with AIDS who sues his firm for discrimination in Philadelphia (1993) and for his role as a simple-minded man in Forrest Gump (1994). He has been involved in some space-related films - starring in the movie Apollo 13 where he played astronaut and commander James Lovell and going on to become the executive producer of the twelve part HBO docu-drama From the Earth to the Moon. Hanks' career continues and he has recently appeared in The Da Vinci Code (2006).
