Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was a monumental figure of the German Romantic period and of German literature in particlular. He was also however a scientist who carried on research in biology and optics, and used poetry as a means to express his feelings about the world. Goethe was also the friend and confidante of Prince Carl August of Weimar who he joined for a period at court. Goethes list of translators; Shelley, Longfellow and Coleridge amongst them; attests to the high regard in which he was held during his lifetime, and that has scarcely changed since.
