Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955) was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics for his explanation of the photoelectric effect in 1905. He was a theoretical physisist and was well known for his work on the special and general theories of relativity. Einstein became world famous during his lifetime and he has been described as "the greatest scientist of the twentieth century".
