Krafft A. Ehricke (1917 -1984)
Krafft A. Ehricke (1917 -1984) was a German rocket engineer. Influenced by the film 'Woman in the Moon', Ehricke believed in space travel from a very young age and when he was 12 years old, he formed his own rocket society. Ehricke eventually went onto study aeronautical engineering at Berlin Technical University and later worked as a propulsion engineer for several aircraft manufacturers. His enthusiasm for space travel did not wane, and whilst working for Convair his concepts for space travel became popular and helped encourage NASA to progress. In his 1948 book 'The Mars Project' he described how humans could travel to Mars using a ferry system, similar to the modern concept of a 'space shuttle'. In 1997, Ehricke's ashes were launched into earth orbit. "
