John Donne (1572-1631) was a leading English poet of the Metaphysical school and dean of St. Paul's Cathedral, London (1621-31). Donne is often considered the greatest love poet in the English language. He is also noted for his religious verse and treatises and for his sermons, which rank among the best of the 17th century.
