Rene Descartes (1596 - 1650) was a French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist. He is often described as the 'founder of modern philosophy and 'the father of modern mathematics' and was one of the key figures involved in the scientific revolution. Descartes was often known as Cartesius and the Cartesian coordinate system of geometry and algebra, which he invented, has been named in his honour. He famously made the statement  "Cogito ergo sum" which is commonly quoted in English as "I think, therefore I am".
