Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802)
Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802) began his career as a physician at Lichfield in 1756. He married Mary Howard in 1757, and they soon began living in the fine house, now called Darwin House, at the edge of the Cathedral Close. It was here that Erasmus established his great reputation as a doctor, and was widely regarded as the finest physician of his day. We know him as Charles Darwin's Grandfather, and also as the person who formulated one of the first formal theories on evolution in his book 'The Laws of Organic Life'. It is probably no coincidence that Charles Darwin, the grandson of such a progressive thinker, produced some of the most important work in the history of biological and social thought.
