Charles Darwin (1809 - 1882) was the naturalist aboard H.M.S. Beagle on a British expedition around the world in the 1830s. It was on this trip that he gathered evidence which he would later use in support of his theory of evolution through a mechanism which he described as 'natural selection'. This was stated in his book The Origin of Species published in 1959. He originally studied both medicine in Edinburgh and theology at Cambridge University before developing an interest in natural history.
