George Darley (1795-1846) was born in Dublin and later moved to London in 1821. As well as writing novels and plays he was also a gifted mathematician, and made his living by writing textbooks on mathematics and through being a drama critic for contemporary magazines of his time. His first poetry was published in 1822 at the age of 27. He suffered from a severe stammer, and also from bad migraines; which probably didn't improve his mood when reviewing dramatic productions! A Phoenix is a mythical bird that is reborn in flame from the ashes.
