George William Curtis (1824 - 1892) was an American writer. As a young man, he spent in Europe, Egypt and Syria before returning to New York to embark on a career as a writer for several newspapers and magazines. He later became the political editor of Harper's Weekly, and in 1871 he was appointed to chair the commission on the reform of the civil service. He became president of the National Civil Service Reform League and of the New York Civil Service Reform Association.
