Harry Crosby (1898-1929) was born in Boston to a wealthy family with links to the banking industry. Yet he managed to avoid a life in numbers by volunteering for the First World War upon leaving school in 1917. He served in the American Field Service Ambulance Corps and was at the Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Verdun (where 800,000 people were to lose their lives). Upon his return he attended Harvard and met his wife who he married in 1921; before going to live in Paris. During this hectic period he first started publishing poetry, and also set up his own publishing company 'The Black Sun Press' which would later publish work by James Joyce. His death was suffered at his own hand in a bizarre suicide pact that took everyone by surprise, as he was found next to a lady friend, Josephine Bigelow; with a gun in his hand and a bullet in his brain. So ensuring that whilst the light shone briefly; today, the enigma of Harry Crosby still burns brightly.
