Edward James Mortimer Collins (1827-1876) was born in Plymouth, England and became a schoolmaster at Queen Elizabeth's College, Guernsey, and a professional writer in later years. He was principally a writer of Romance novels, although as the above shows he was also a sometime poet and essayist. Positivism was a movement that developed in the nineteenth century with the idea that greater stress should be placed upon immediate experience, namely the positive data that was obtained through the senses. With works such as Charles Darwin's (1809-1882) Origin of the Species being defining moments for the movement.
