Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) was born in Ottery St. Mary in England. He was the son of a clergman and something of an idealist, who planned with a fellow poet Robert Southey to set up a small utopian community in the United States. The project never came to fruition, but in 1798 he published his landmark work Lyrical Ballards with William Wordsworth, a volume which was a seminal work in English Romanticism.
