George Washington Carver (1864 - 1943) was an American botanist who taught former slaves farming techniques for self-sufficiency. In 1887, he was accepted into Simpson College, Iowa, as its first African-American student. He then transferred in 1891 to Iowa State Agricultural College where he later the first African-American faculty member.
