Alexis Carrel (1873 -1944)
Alexis Carrel (1873 -1944) was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1912 for his work on vascular suture and the transplantation of blood vessels and organs. He was a French surgeon and biologist although he also practiced in the United States and was a member of various learned societies worldwide. Carrel's experiments led to advances in surgery and tissue culture - he co-created the "perfusion pump" which allowed organs to stay alive indepdendently during surgery.
