William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878) was born in Cummington, Mass. USA the son of a doctor. He was exposed to literature from an early age via his fathers large collection of books, and quickly became an admirer and keen observer of the countryside in his poetry. He practiced at the bar as a lawyer, and in 1826 became the associate editor of the New York Evening Post; and from 1829 until his death was part owner and editor in chief. He is also recognised as having an important place in the history of the analysis of American literature, as one of the earliest theorists of poetry.
