William Bragg (1862-1942) was an English physicist. In 1915, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics with his son Lawrence for their analysis of crystal structures using X-rays, which created a new branch of science and revealed the way in which crystals were arranged. During World War I, Bragg was responsible for research on the detection and measurement of underwater sounds that could help identify the location of submarines. To honour this work and his other contributions to science, he was knighted in 1920, received The Order of Merit in 1931, and was elected president of the Royal Society in 1935.
