Wystan Hugh Auden (1907-1973)
Wystan Hugh Auden (1907-1973) was an English poet influenced, in his youth, by classic poets like Thomas Hardy, Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson and William Blake. Often considered to be the most influential poet of the 20th Century, he is renowned for his ability to write in almost all forms of verse, to incorporate popular culture, current events and vernacular in his poems, for his wit and for his vast knowledge of literature, art, politics and science that he would draw on in his work. His first book of poetry called Poems was published in 1930 and established him as a prominent voice. In 1939, he moved to the United States where he became an advocate for socialism and developed an interest in religion. He is also remembered for his essays and plays.
