John Armstrong 1709-1779) was born in Roxburghshire in Scotland. He studied to become a Doctor in Edinburgh and qualified in 1732, before going down to London to practice. In 1736 he published a sex manual for newly weds called 'The Oeconomy of Love'. In 1746 he was apponted physician to the London Soldiers Hospital, and from 1760 to 1763 was physician to the forces in Germany. He cultivated his poetry from an early age, and commonly wrote about medical themes. 'The Art of Preserving Health' was published in four books in 1744, was immediately popular, and remains his best known work. At the recall of the troops from Germany Armstrong returned to London, receiving half pay for the rest of his life.. He died at his house in Russell Street, Covent Garden on the 7th September 1779 from the effects of a fall.
