Grant Allen (1848-1899)
Grant Allen (1848-1899) was born in Ontario, Canada the son of a Protestant Minister. He was educated in France and England, and in his mid twenties was appointed Professor of Logic at Queens College, Jamaica. It was during a holiday while at the college that Allen became exposed to the works of Charles Darwin and Edward Clodd (the author of 'The Childhood of the World'); and became an agnostic and committed socialist. Upon arriving back in England in 1876 he immediatley contacted Edward Clodd, and they remained friends for the rest of his life. It was also around this time that Allen became a prolific writer, and was known for both science essays and also works of literature. He died at his home on Hindhead, Haslemere, on 24 October 1899.
