Aeschylus (525 BC - 431 BC)
Aeschylus (525 BC - 431 BC) is known as the 'Father of Tragedy'. Born in the city of Eleusis, he claims to have started writing tragedies after Dionysus appeared to him in a dream and told him to do so. When he started writing, theatre was in its infancy and Aeschylus was the first to introduce a second actor - before this, plays usually consisted of one actor interacting with a chorus. He is said to have written over 90 plays in his lifetime although only seven have survived.
